Szczawno Zdroj

Szczawno Zdroj – This spa town is in Wałbrzych County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in the south-western part of Poland. Prior to 1945 it was a part of Germany. It lies north of the Sudetan mountains, slightly north-west of Wałbrzych and south-west of Wrocław. It lies at an altitude between 400m and 430m above sea level. It has a mild and healthy climate which is moderated by the dense forest that surrounds the city.

Szczawno Zdroj was mentioned in the “Book of Henryk”, a document prepared by Henryk I Brodaty in 1221. By the end of the 13th century the village had became a part of the estates of Castle Ksiaz. The fate of Szczawno Zdroj was thus linked to that of the castle. Initially the village belonged to the Duchy of Wroclaw. The town became a place for the ruling courts to reside.

Szczawno Zdroj – spa town

Szczawno ZdrojSzczawno Zdroj is one of the oldest spa towns in Poland. The town has naturally carbonated spring water which is high in bicarbonates, sodium, calcium and magnesium. The beneficial effects of its mineral waters on the human body have been well known since the 16th century. As Science increased human knowledge, so did peoples interest in the town. In the sixteen century, a physician and doctor, Caspar Schwenckfeldt conducted research into plants and minerals. His numerous scientific studies formed the basis of many early Balneological treatments. His thesis, written in 1605 in the Jelenia Gora region, provided a valuable insight for anyone wanting to invest money in spa resorts.

The first sanatorium in Szczawno Zdroj was opened in 1815. Soon afterwards, numerous facilities were built and equipped. This included cafes, restaurants, a mineral water pump room, a theatre, a concert hall and parks with walking alleyways. The final shape of the resort was made in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Many of the older buildings are in excellent shape. The Spa Theatre that was built in 1896 still puts on live performances. It is stylish with its stunning interior decoration. The tea-room has the atmosphere of the bygone era.

Visitors to Szczawno Zdroj thus find a town which has been meticulously restored. It is fully-equipped for healing, rehabilitation and recreation. The additional services provided (medical, residential etc) ensure that returning to full health is a pleasant experience. Szczawno Zdroj caters for a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders, diseases of the respiratory system, urinary tract and the digestive system as well as cardiovascular and metabolic complaints. There are treatments for children too, including assistance for asthma, allergies and chronic sinusitis, diseases of the endocrine system, metabolism, posture defects and cerebral palsy etc.

Szczawno Zdroj is a gem. It is a relatively cheap place to stay when compared to other spa towns in Europe. Szczawno Zdroj is a good location for anyone wanting to explore the area. The Sudete mountains are nearby and there are plenty of other great places within a short distance such as Karpacz, Grodno Castle and Bystrzyckie Lake in Zagórze Śląskie.
