ICT Starters

ICT Starters

Cambridge ICT Starters introduces learners, typically aged 5 to 14 years, to the key ICT applications they need to achieve computer literacy and to understand the impact of technology on our daily lives.

ICT (Information and Communications Technology) is now part of the educational experience of children in most parts of the world. Taught as a subject in its own right, as well as being embedded within the curriculum, ICT is increasingly regarded as a new ‘literacy’, alongside reading, writing and numeracy. Cambridge ICT Starters is designed to introduce learners to the key ICT applications they need to use in order to acquire that literacy, and to understand the impact of technology on our daily lives. The syllabus provides a framework in which ICT competence and practical skills can be developed within an environment that is appropriate for the age of the learners. It also provides a structured scheme of assessment. Where appropriate, guidance on the e-Safety and ethical implications of the technologies used within each module are outlined. Modules can be delivered according to the needs of each learning situation – across the curriculum or as a separate course of study.

Model

A model is a program which has been developed to copy the way a system works in real life. It uses mathematical formulas and calculations to predict what is likely to happen based on data recorded about what actually did happen in the past.

Program solutions

Help students understand that problems can be solved by working out a precise sequence of steps. Recognise that computers are controlled by programs that are written by developers. Create sequences of instructions to control a computer.

Handle information

Students explore and use a variety of methods to enter and store information onto a computer. They classify information, store, retrieve and process information that has been stored in a pre-prepared database or spreadsheet

Communicate

Students begin to communicate ideas using words, tables, pictures and sound. They create, redraft and present ideas using text manipulation, laying out text, checking for errors and correcting them. They use a graphics package to present ideas and recognise the need to communicate safely and responsibly
